Revisiting the world’s most important six second drum loop
January 3, 2011 § 1 Comment
This audio/video installation project was produced in 2004 by Nate Harrison as part of an installation project “that unfolds a critical perspective of perhaps the most sampled drum beat in the history of recorded music, the Amen Break.” This 17 minute audio documentary delivers a lot of history and is highly recommended if you haven’t seen/heard this work. Harrison (who is on the faculty at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston) takes an academic approach to the material and gets a lot deeper than you’d imagine in under 20 minutes. By the end he’s quoting Lawrence Lessig and using the Amen Break as an example of why laws surrounding sampling are faulty. Great stuff. Below is a piece that Harrison created in 2005 celebrating the mythic Roland TB-303.
The Flashbulb [aka Chr1stpunch3r] Misc. Shit Vol. 4 – UNRELEASED
March 24, 2009 § 1 Comment
The Flashbulb (aka CHR1STPUNCH3R, real name Benn Jordan) is fast becoming a new favorite of mine. He’s a prolific electronic music composer and producer who slips between sounds, edits, genres with an ear for pace and timing. Melodic, chopped and tossed, usualy short compositions drift from classical backgrounds (reminders of early AFX and squarepusher) into micro-edit journeys of frequency. Props to Benn Jordan for an amazing group of tracks but even more thanks for releasing this FREE to you. Support him any way you can.. start by checking out his website and then download MISC SHIT VOL 4 HERE
Next, dear downloaders, please take a moment and read THIS – a well written piece by Benn Jordan which will explain why I admire this guy better than I could explain myself. Includes links for donations because he is dishing out AMAZING music for free.. READ MORE
Long-anticipaed SHED remixes drop! Reworks by Surgeon and Martyn
March 17, 2009 § Leave a Comment
By my record (and RA if I’m not mistaken) Shed’s Shedding The Past was the best electronic music album of 2008. Many fans have been eagerly anticipating the next move and were pleased for today’s release of “The Lower Upside Down (Surgeon Remix)” and “Another Wedged Chicken (Martyn’s 131 Remix.)” While not as groundbreaking as Shed’s own compositions these remixes do the trick of filling our appetite for the moment. Surgeon’s mix is hard and nasty (as expected) while Martyn’s is more playful, breaky, and repeats “Chicken” overtop a throbbing break. More interesting than I expected and definitely worth picking up. Find it at Boomkat online HERE. More elaborate review by Resident Advisor HERE.
Dopestep. F releases "Phantom" / "The Untitled Dub" 12" on 7even Recordings

This Mary Anne Hobbs fave is a dubstep scorcher.. fusing elements of UK garage with Dubstep.. but retaining an early Basic Channel feel. Rippling bass on “The Untitled Dub” is thunderous in the clubs while “Phantom” is a bit more frenetic breakbeat with dark dub stabs (and my fave of the two.) Can’t stop listening to this one. Check out the RA review HERE and the Beatport review / download HERE.
