FACT mix 190 by German producer/DJ Kassem Mosse “blows us away”

October 6, 2010 § Leave a Comment

Or so says the first line of the podcast’s introduction which you can check out here. Truth be told I wasn’t aware of this man’s genius until my friend Vicki made me download and take a listen. General consensus is that this is the best Fact mix of the year. Because it’s only up for a 3 weeks I highly suggest grabbing it now.

From Fact: The German DJ/producer, real name Gunnar Wendel, has been behind some of the most curious and invigorating house and techno records of the past four years, first coming to our attention with his rugged, syrup-slow contribution to part three of Workshop’s 12″ series. His Aqueous Haze (The World Disappeared Into An) EP followed soon after, and its B-side ’578′ was given a new lease of life this year when Omar-S remixed it and released two versions on his FXHE label.

It’s testament to the Wendel’s versatility and worth as a producer that he’s in not just with the serious heads from Berlin and Detroit, but those from London as well. A Kassem Mosse remix is forthcoming on Joy Orbison’s Doldrums label, and he recently released two tracks, including the grotty beatdown stomper ‘We Speak To Those, on Nonplus Records, the imprint operated by d’n’b emigres Instra:mental and home also to releases by ASC, Skream, dBridge and Actress. Oh, and Mosse has just contributed to the star-studded Commix remix album alongside the likes of Pangaea, Burial and Holland’s 2562.

The Kassem Mosse FACT mix reflects the breadth of Wendel’s production output, but firmly anchors itself in crunchy Detroit fare from Urban Tribe, Andres, Moodymann Theo Parrish and Leron Carson. Put together with a real mastery of groove across different rhythms and tempos, it’s simply one of the most absorbing and addictive FACT mixes we’ve issued all year.

UK's PINCH talks Dubstep, Flying Lotus, Tectonic with Fact Magazine

pinch-maiiin2

Tectonic head-honcho and dubstep producer Rob “Pinch” Ellis gives some nice words and inspirations in this week’s Fact Magazine online. The Bristol-based music guru gets into many subjects including sound mastering, Flying Lotus, the Tectonic label and the future of dubstep. Read the entire article HERE. Thanks to Fact Magazine for this excerpt.

Of all the artists assembled for Tectonic Plates Vol.2, Flying Lotus is perhaps the least expected. Was his track something he’d already made then offered to you, or did he produce it with Tectonic in mind?

“I’m not sure what his original intentions with it were. He just sent me a bunch of stuff and that was the one I picked out. But I think he kind of finished it off for the project – what I heard originally was the demo version, though I didn’t know that at the time. Without wanting to sound like some kind of tempo nazi or whatever [laughs] – I wanted it to be within mixable range and he’s gone for 142bpm which is within the  normal mixable range for dubstep. To be honest with you, Flying Lotus isn’t normally a Tectonic artist, neither is Benga, and neither is Joker really – but the tracks that I’ve pulled for this compilation I think have got a very Tectonic feel about them. There is definitely a family element to the label, and you’ll always see regular faces on the label like myself and 2562 and people who’ve sort of come through being part of the Tectonic family, but also I like to think that it’s a place where people who don’t always concentrate on a sound that’s particularly Tectonic have the chance to put something out which does fit in with that sound. So for example the Benga track is quite a techno-y one and Flying Lotus’s one isn’t really a dancefloor tune but it’s got that deep, cinematic sound which I think is quite Tectonic.”

One thing that’s always struck me about Tectonic is how well-organized it is; everything is done efficiently and to a very high standard. So I wondered, is this the first label you’ve ever been involved in running?

“No, it’s not the first label I was involved with. The first would have been Subtext which was 2004, put out a couple of Vex’d tracks. That was really where I first was involved with every stage of vinyl manufacture through to the distribution and things; once you’ve done it once and you’ve made some kind of successful route into it, then following on from that isn’t anywhere near as big a step. We’ve been quite lucky in having a lot of support from the distribution company that we use, Baked Goods: they helped put us in touch with designers who can organise the CD layouts and so on so that we just need to feed them the photographic images and they can arrange it and so on…”

Talk about a dream project! Burial and Four Tet have apparently teamed-up for an upcomming ALBUM on warp. To whet our appetites Warp records has planned a super-limited 12″ release featuring the two artists. No liner notes, no artwork, no promos,  no mp3, vinyl-only 12″ release from Burial and Four Tet. The email from warp had the above image (a black box) as the album artwork. Like many of you I can’t WAIT to hear the sound of this record. Warp  is bound to inspire some top-notch production from both Burial and Four Tet for the “Moth/Wolf Club” Ep. Both artists are known for rule-breaking and exploring new sonic terriory.. the result is bound to be a success. It’s a limited-edition release that is apparently already sold-out.. but sets to release on May 4, 2009. Stay tuned here for more info on this collaboration.. I will post sound bytes as soon as I can find them!

dopplerrustie-main2

This latest installment from the now-infamous Wireblock label demands attention for Rustie and the Glasgow dub/grime scene. It’s exactly what you want from Rustie – deep subs and edited-to-fuck bleeps, squelches and 8 bit grit. The b-side includes the much-acclaimed  Heinrich Mueller (Gravitational Equilibrium Mix.) Nice article in Fact Magazine on Rustie and his hero who appears on the new ep. Listen to the new tracks below, and pick up this limited-edition EP as soon as you can find it.. (try here.)

Tracklisting:

1 Tar [Listen]

2 Bad Science [Listen ]

3 Shadow Enter [Listen ]

4 Zig-Zag (Heinrich Mueller Gravitational Equilibrium Mix) [Listen]

5 Zig-Zag (Reprise) [Listen]

Thanks to FACT magazine for the tidbits and links in this article.
